About the Employment Allowance

What is Employment Allowance?

The Employment Allowance is a UK government incentive designed to help businesses lower their employment costs by reducing their employer Class 1 National Insurance (NIC) contributions by up to £10,500 per year (2025/26).


This allowance is particularly valuable for recruitment agencies, umbrella companies, and growing businesses that employ contractors or multiple workers. By lowering the NIC bill, companies can reinvest these savings into expanding their services or hiring more staff.


Key things to know about the Employment Allowance:

  • It is available to most small and medium-sized employers, including limited companies and agencies.
  • It is applied automatically through your payroll as long as your business is eligible.
  • The allowance does not reduce employees’ NIC – it only applies to the employer’s NIC liability.
  • Employers can backdate claims for up to 4 tax years if they meet the conditions for those years.
